Burgers are life….

This is a story of one mans love of one of the most universally accepted food types – starting life as high cuisine, the most expensive item on the menu to its transformation to being served from roving carts to hungry factory workers that needed to eat on their feet. This simple concept of seasoned ground beef, fried with onions and served between bread spread across the globe and has evolved to become a rich and diverse mix of flavours, world class ingredients demonstrating more creativity than you can shake a stick at whilst retaining its universal appeal.

Some of my earliest memories, memories which a lot of people can relate to was the excitement at the prospect of going to get a burger from a local outlet, for me that was either the local Wimpy, or McDonalds. This feeling is still as relevant today as it was then, for me and millions of others from all countries and cultures. This is simple food, that you could eat with your hands and is utterly delicious…. a love of the burger was born.

Fast forward a few years, and home-made burgers were the most requested of meals. The flavours evolving to suit the home kitchen, simpler, stripped back from the mass produced corporate fayre on offer these were hearty, tasty and equally as delicious. Hand made by my Mum (usually on a weds) which we would devour whilst in front of the TV watching the latest episode of Star Trek – another guilty pleasure that I carried into adulthood.

Realising that a burger was something that was easily within reach of the home-cook was a revelation to me. Here was a food that I loved, that was easily within my culinary skillset to create from scratch that required nothing more complicated than a sharp knife and a frying pan helped me to understand that cooking in general isn’t magic. As with most things in life, you get out what you put in. The better the ingredients, the better the result. The more time spent prepping, the better the result. The more consideration to the cooking, the better the result – you get the jist!
